Understanding Strip Quilting
Can you answer this quilting question please?
I want to make a 5" square made out of strips of fabric. Can you tell what size strips I need and how many. I would be using 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Answer:
You can do any size strips you want, as long as you make it add up to 5 inches when you are done. If it's important that all of your strips be of a uniform size, then cut them all evenly, adding on half an inch to each strip. For example: 2 strips, cut them 3 inches wide; 5 strips, cut them 1 and 1/2 inches wide; or 10 strips, cut them 1 inch wide. At the end, you will have an extra quarter inch all around that you can use to sew it to something else, or trim away.
I don't like things too predictable, so I would just sew a bunch of different-sized strips together without measuring, until I get a rectangle that's bigger than 5x5, and cut the final product down to 5 inches afterwards.
