Stone Temple Pilots Release New Album

Very few bands survive after a hiatus. The Stone Temple Pilots may be an exception. The band is expected to release its sixth studio album, Stone Temple Pilots on May 25, 2010.

The Stone Temple Pilots, also called STP, is a band that found immediate success with their 1992 album "Core". The album became platinum, 8x and sent STP into becoming one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1990s.

STP, made up of band members Scott Weiland, brothers Robert DeLeo and Dean DeLeo and Eric Kretz was one of the top selling bands of the 90s, selling nearly 40 million records worldwide. During the 90s, the band had 16 top ten singles on the Billboard rock charts, six of which peaked at #`1. They also won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song "Plush".

What caused the band to fade a bit off the scene? Mostly Weilands continual drug offenses and multiple concert cancellations. This in turn caused band members to separate and launch new careers. The band formally separated in 2003 and didn't reunite until April of 2008 whereupon they went on a 71-date tour.

So how did this band of two brothers and a couple of guys get together and become so successful in the first place? As they tell it, their story dates back to a concert in California in 1986 where Weiland and Robert DeLeo were sitting around chatting about their girlfriend. It wasn't long that both realized they were dating the same woman. While in any other situation a fight might have broke out, with these two, a friendship ensued instead. Each broke it off with the girl, moved into the girl's vacated apartment and before long formed a band. In the beginning the band included friends Corey Hicock and David Allen. Once Allen left, drummer Eric Kretz joined. Then came Robert's brother Dean DeLeo, who decided to play guitar in the band, replacing Hicock. At the time, the four called themselves Mighty Joe Young. The band recorded their first demo tape in 1990.

Later, an attorney advised the group that there already was a blues man who sang under the name Mighty Joe Young and to change their name. For a while they called themselves Shirley Temples Pussy but then changed the name again. Liking the initials STP, they settled on Stone Temple Pilots, this was in 1992.

Despite their success, the band received a lot of slack by critics. In a poll by the Rolling Stone magazine people voted them Best New Band and Worst New Band. The group went on to win Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist and Heavy Metal/Hard Rock New Artist at the American Music Awards. In 1994 they also won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with the song "Plush."

The group pushed forward with more albums and hit singles including the single "Interstate Love Song", "Vasoline", and "Big Empty", which appeared on their second album "Purple." Whether it was the success, pressure or criticisms that got to Weiland, the lead singer began diving deeper into his addiction to the point of being arrested for possession of heroin and cocaine, facing up to three years in prison in 1995.

Weiland's drug addiction continued to get in the way of the band with show cancellations and his inability to appear at rehearsals. Weiland was ordered into drug rehabilitation in 1996 due to his arrest.  Trying to continue to record was not easy as Weiland continued to face problems. Although the band released another album "No. 4" in 1999, Weiland was again sentenced to a year in a Los Angeles county jail for violating probation.

In 2003, the Stone Temple Pilots finally separated and band members went on to form new bands. Despite the split, by 2007 the band somehow found a way to get back together.  Shortly after, Stone Temple Pilots announced a 65-date North American tour. In 2008 the group headlined the Virgin Mobile Festival in Baltimore as well as the annual Voodoo Experience in New Orleans, giving one of their most successful performances since reforming.

Now the group is to release their next album "Stone Temple Pilots". The band wrote 18 songs, twelve of which were planned to be released on the album.
