Understanding Denim Quilt
I don't know if my sewing machine needs to be replace/fixed or if it is operator error.?
Whenever I sew with a small seam allowance, the fabric always gets caught on the needle and shoved down into the machine. I hope that makes sense. It often takes some good tugging and cutting to get it out. I have this problem with all fabrics (quilting cotton, denim, flannel, felt, etc.) I have tried using different needles appropriate for the fabric I am using, but it doesn't seem to help. Could it be something I am doing, or is it my machine? Is there anything I can do to fix this? As long as the seam allowance is about 1/2 inch, I am fine. Anything smaller is a problem. I would like to piece a quilt, but it never turns out because I ruin most of the squares trying to sew them together. Help please.

Answer:
Operator error.
1) Use a new needle (if you hear a needle go "pop pop pop pop" as you're stitching, it's dull.
Sharp needles have fewer problems with shoving the fabric down the needle hole.
2) If your machine will allow it, position the needle to the far right position, so the seam allowance is better supported. If your machine doesn't allow this, see if there's a "straight stitch needle plate" for your machine. If there's not, cut a thin piece of plastic (like an old credit card) to fit over the needle hole and punch a single small hole in the plastic for the needle. Tape it down into the correct position. Or pick up an old Singer 15 or 66 or similar straight stitcher for $10-20 at a garage sale for quilting.
3) Hang on to the needle and bobbin threads when you start the seam for the first few stitches.
4) If the problem is purely at the start of a seam, consider using a fold of scrap fabric as a seam starter: sew off the waste cloth and onto the start of the seam.
